PREFACE
This collection of biographies of prominent Negro men
and women of West Virginia is Volume VII. of the Biographical
History of the American Negro. It does not include all the
important men and women of the race in the State, but it does
include many of the noblest and best. As the book deals largely
with contemporary characters, we hardly expect everybody to agree
with what has been written about everybody else. Those whose
stories have been told doubtless have their faults. We have not
sought for their faults, but have endeavored to emphasize those
things which it is hoped may be helpful.
The effort has been to make the work
representative, dealing with the leaders in every honorable
profession and line of work.
The Editor, who is also the Publisher, is grateful
for the cordial spirit of cooperation which made the volume
possible. The present generation should find inspiration and
encouragement in these stories, and it is believed the future
historian will find them of value.
