DESERTERS—Deserters from the army and stragglers arrive in squads daily and are committed to the Atheneum until they can be forwarded to their regiments. All deserters from regiments now serving within this department are sent here. In most case they are not severely punished, but in all cases the thirty dollars paid to the person making the arrest is deducted from the soldier’s pay.
