Remember...Addie Duffield

| Addie Duffield, son of William Anderson and Mary Jerusha [Mollohan] Duffield, was born February 19, 1893 in Calhoun County at Chloe, West Virginia. Like most of the people in Calhoun County at that time, William Duffield made his living as a farmer. As a young man, Addie worked on the family farm, helping his father with all the work. |  |

On June 5, 1917, Addie registered for the World War I draft. According to his draft registration card, he was 24 years old, medium height and build, with blue eyes and black hair. He served as a private in Co. L, 30th Infantry, which was part of the 3rd Infantry Division. |
| In late September 1918, members of the 30th Infantry were preparing to participate in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, which resulted in the final defeat of the German Army and the signing of an armistice on November 11, 1918. |  Grantsville, November 1918 |

While this offensive was getting underway, Addie Duffield was probably already ill from the influenza that killed him on September 26, 1918. The devastating influenza epidemic of 1918-1919 killed millions of people worldwide. Thousands of the US soldiers on the battlefields of Europe died as a result of the influenza instead of the weapons of the enemy. |
| Addie Duffield was buried in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery in Romagne, France. He was survived by his mother Mary; brothers Curtis, Scott, and Thurman; and sisters Ettie Duffield Knotts, Bina Duffield Siers, Ursala Duffield Shawver, Osie Duffield Jarvis, and Elsa Duffield Criss. |  Addie Duffield November 1918 |
