The mission of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History is to identify, preserve, protect, promote and present the ideas, arts and artifacts of West Virginia’s heritage, building pride in our past accomplishments and confidence in our future.
Welcome from Commissioner Randall Reid-Smith.
May is a great month at the Division.
All of our sites – West Virginia State Museum, West Virginia Independence Hall, Grave Creek Mound Archaeology Complex and Museum in the Park at Logan – are hosting school groups during this month. We are always glad to share history and culture lessons with children on field trips.
It’s also a great month to be outdoors. Visit Grave Creek on May 20 to help sow seeds for the Native American interpretive garden. Indoors, there is plenty of family fun as well.
At the Culture Center, we are getting ready for Vandalia Gathering. This year the dates for our annual Memorial Day festival are May 25 – 27. As always, there will be plenty of dancers, musicians, storytellers and liars around to entertain everyone. We start the weekend with the opening of our annual West Virginia Juried Quilt exhibition. This year, as every year, we think we have some of the most beautiful quilts and wall hangings that we have ever seen!
