This object is an important item in the Collection of the State Museum. In fact, it's on display even now. It dates from before Statehood, it belonged to a person famous in West Virginia (and American) history, and it's a tool that, although more modern, is still in common use today.
These close-up images are the opposing ends of the telescope George Washington used when surveying lands in West Virginia. |
