DESIGN STARS WANTED !!!

The West Virginia State Museum and the Governor’s Academy of Teaching Excellence (GATE) are seeking talented educators to develop curriculum programs and materials for the inaugural Teachers Resource Kit and Curriculum Guide, setting a new prototype for classroom work and pre-visit preparedness.

The programs will:

  • Meet the 21st century content standards and objectives for West Virginia schools,
  • Combine multiple disciplines
  • Target grades 4 – 8

The format will:

  • Involve designing experiences that require research, investigation and reflection which in turn strengthens higher-order thinking skills and analytical proficiency

The final body of work will:

  • Accentuate 21st century skills and learning
  • Employ new thinking in acquiring usable knowledge from historical data
  • Establish a prototype for future publications, programming and web site content.

The new West Virginia State Museum will be so exceptional and unique it will require a new attitude towards learning. This will not be your mother’s or father’s teachers guide!

DESIGN TEAM MATRIX

The Design Teams will consist of four groups of four, one member being the team leader and having oversight responsibilities. The teams will concentrate of their assigned period of time in West Virginia history.

TEAM A: Prehistory (300 million BC – 1650 AD) and Frontier (1754 – 1860)

TEAM B: Civil War and the 35th State (1861 – 1899)

TEAM C: Industrialization (1900 – 1945)

TEAM D: Change and Tradition (1954 – 21st Century) and West Virginians at War (late 19th century conflicts to the present)

  • Two mandatory GATE sessions June 23 – 26 and August 11 – 13
  • Four team leaders will visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum May 30 – June 1 (transportation provided)
  • All Design Team members will receive lodging, meals, materials required for the project, 6 hours of graduate credit at no cost to them and $1500 and $2000 in stipends, invitations to pre-opening events and appropriate acknowledgement in publications
